New air for Umeå - Police simulators for the university

A study by the European Environment Agency (EEA) ranked Umeå as the city with the cleanest air in Europe in 2021. This is not only the result of being located in a wonderful natural environment at the mouth of the river that gives its name to the city, at the Gulf of Bothnia, but the result of a way of life based on respect for the environment and the implementation of innovative solutions.

The aim to improve the quality of life of its inhabitants by making the city smarter and greener has led to its architecture receiving several awards for its high levels of energy efficiency. Around 95% of the energy consumed comes from renewable sources. The city is likely to have a neutral carbon footprint by 2030. This is thanks to such a high proportion of renewable energy and increased use of urban public transport, especially by young people, based on zero-emission mobility and cycling.

One of the most important institutions in the entire region, and key to this innovative action, is Umeå Universitet, which has been training police cadets from all over Sweden since the beginning of the 21st century. As part of its continuous improvement process, in 2022 the university will begin operating the most advanced police driving simulation centre in Scandinavia, which will be a leading centre in Europe.

With the introduction of driving simulators on campus, the Police Education Unit at Umeå Universitet will be able to train more students in the same amount of time in a safe environment. In addition, the simulator is designed to obtain biometric data from drivers with the ultimate aim of being able to conduct research in the field of road safety. All students using the simulator will have personalised training, as they will be able to access analysis for each of the sessions in which they have participated. The instructor will therefore be able to highlight the mistakes made by each student or group of students and design exercises specifically for them.

For Lander it is an honour and a privilege to launch this project with Umeå Universitet, making it the first automotive project in the country, but the second project we have launched in Sweden, after the Stockholm Metro simulator.
