New metro simulator in Kolkata: LANDER on track with its commitment in India
Kolkata Metro Rail Corporation (KMRC) has placed its trust in LANDER for the supply of a new driving simulation system. This new contract has been possible thanks to our collaboration with Swastik Overseas, our partner in India. Thanks to this project, we are reinforcing our position as the benchmark in the railway simulation market in India.
In 1984 the Kolkata metro was a pioneer when it built India's first metro line. In 2020 a new milestone was reached with the opening of the second line, the East-West corridor, where part of the route will run under the Hooghly River, and will connect the industrial area of Howrah with the Sector V technology parks. In December 2022 the first section of line 3 was inaugurated and it is expected that in the next few years two more lines will be opened: the Airport Line and line 4.
With 15 million inhabitants, Kolkata is India’s third largest metropolitan area. In recent years the country has been experiencing powerful economic development and Kolkata is one of the country’s main engines. To support this growth, the city and the country are investing strongly in the construction of the metro network.
In this project we will realistically simulate 3 Kolkata metro lines among which are the East-West Line and the Airport Line.
On the one hand, the project will have a replica cab mounted on a motion platform with six degrees-of-freedom. This will allow drivers of the East-West Line to receive training in an entirely faithful recreation of the train manufactured by Indian company BEML.
On the other hand, LANDER will manufacture a multi-purpose simulator that will add versatility to the training with a high level of immersion. In this multi-purpose simulator, Kolkata Metro will be able to simulate any of the 3 rolling stock models chosen: BEML, the one by ICF Medha and the one by CRRC Dalian. The drivers of any of the project's 3 lines will be able to be trained in this simulator. Each line will have its own environment, signalling system and its real train with its controls. This simulator will be ground-breaking in railway training in India.
We are thankful to KMRC for placing their trust in LANDER to carry out this project. Likewise, we want to express our gratitude and appreciation to the whole team at Swastik Overseas for making it possible. With everyone’s help we will develop the driving simulator that will best respond to the training needs of Kolkata metro’s train drivers.
