Skytrain, the best possible view of Bangkok
Welcome to the future.
This could herald the start of a trip on the famous Skytrain, which zips through the sky and across Bangkok at the same height as its motorways, offering a bird's-eye view of the city's most modern features. A city that has undergone a huge transformation in recent years.
Thai industry, most of which is concentrated in Bangkok and the surrounding provinces, has expanded exponentially over the last three decades to account for more than one third of the country's GDP. The transformation has led to a rapid modernisation of other aspects that are most important to the country, such as public transport.
In the last 20 years the capital of Thailand has worked hard to create a mass transit system for a population of almost 14 million in the city and its metropolitan area. Construction of the elevated Skytrain system has done much to relieve dense traffic, with passengers whisked in exceptionally clean and silent cars around a city once paralysed by traffic jams.
This modern transportation system is constantly developing, and plans have been made to expand the Northern and Eastern lines in the near future. The new trains by Siemens and CRRC will be added to the present fleet of Siemens EMUA or CNR EMU B trains.
For years the country, the city and most especially the Skytrain itself have been seeking solutions to assist in a tireless quest for innovation and technological development. One example of this is the driving simulator unit recently developed by operator BTS Skytrain alongside LANDER, the first phase of which was successfully installed in March.
The system is multi-purpose, and can provide training for a number of real trains, both the existing trains and those yet to be commissioned. Drivers can be trained in normal and degraded situations over 37 km of track and 35 stations, part of the Sukhumvit line and the Silom line, where the existing Bombardier Cityflo 450 signalling system has already been programmed.
With this unit tailored to the customer's requirements, BTS Skytrain can continue to consolidate its position as an efficient, reliable and safe transit system. There can be no doubt that BTS will continue to furnish the mobility solutions that Thai society requires, just as there can be no doubt that LANDER will be able to assist them on their unstoppable journey into the future.
